In 1967, a small group of women founded a branch of  American Association of  University Women in this area that gave birth to Women’s Rights pioneer Elizabeth Cady Stanton and the first Native American venerable, Kateri Tekakwitha.

The late Eleanor Reed was the first President of this organization. The seminal group of 15 women has grown like the biblical mustard seed into a tree, which today includes 1 of the founding members, Phoebe Boschi.

Nestled in the Foothills region of the Adirondack Mountains and the Mohawk Valley, the Amsterdam-Gloversville-Johnstown branch “Lives the Mission” through the monthly activities that are painstakingly planned during the summer. The branch “Shares the Mission” and offers GATEWAYS to women by collaborating with the area Soroptimists, Girl Scouts of Northeastern NY, the local community college FMCC, and other agencies that work towards the welfare of women.

Branch Time Line Supporting Area Education

1967: Our Amsterdam-Gloversville-Johnstown branch of AAUW was formed.

1991: Our  branch establishes scholarships for area high school seniors.

2000: Our  branch establishes scholarships for Fulton-Montgomery Community College graduates continuing to 4-year institutions.

2000-2012: Our branch held twelve Sister-to-Sister Summits for middle school girls in Fulton, Montgomery, and Hamilton counties.

2003: Our branch instituted math-science awards for 8th grade girls in Fulton, Montgomery, and Hamilton counties.

2006: Our branch held the first Annual Elizabeth Cady Stanton Women’s Symposium  at Fulton-Montgomery Community College

2007: Became a member of the Elizabeth Cady Stanton Women’s Consortium to promote women’s issues including education and history

2011: Our branch began working with Fulton Montgomery Community College and establish e-student affilliation.
