NCCWSL / National Conference for College Women Student Leaders

AGJ awards a branch scholarship to a FMCC student to attend NCCWSL which is held at the end of the school year.  Women students from across the nation attend this annual conference.  NCCWSL provides a transformative experience for attendees, and students return home ready to improve their campuses and their communities.

It is a fast-paced, two-and-a-half day event that addresses the needs of current and aspiring women student leaders.

Rita Mary Burke Scholarship Award

Established in 1999 this award is given to a female non-traditional student graduate of FM who plans to continue her education to earn a bachelor’s degree. The AAUW scholarship is given annually in memory of Rita Mary Burke, FM English Professor and one of the original members of our branch.  The purpose of this scholarship is to reward women who have had to delay their entry into college after high school to work or raise a family and to encourage them to continue to pursue their education.

Dorothy Anderson Wemple Literary Award

This award is given to a graduating high school student.  To win the award, an applicant is required to write a 300-to-500 word research or autobiographical essay on the topic established by the branch.  Dorothy Anderson Wemple was an AAUW member for more than 50 years and a member of our branch since its inception in 1967.  Wemple, who died in 2007, was an English teacher at Knox Junior High School in Johnstown and was a past judge for the essay contest, which began in 1991.
